What’s Your Home’s Brand Personality?

If you’re a homeowner you have inevitably toyed with the idea of a home renovation. No matter if you live in a brand new home or one that has seen some extra decades, there’s always something that you want to fix up or have the opportunity to make it your own. The first step you should consider, and it might not be the obvious one, is to figure out your Home’s Brand Personality.

Wait, am I taking a marketing course or conducting a home renovation? You are ultimately taking the cues from Marketing 101 to help get you to the core of what you want to accomplish for your home renovation. It’s what any business does when embarking on a new beginning or transition so why not do it for your home transition and renovation? And once you have clarity in your home’s brand you’ll be better prepared to share these ideas with your designer so they can translate that into the final product.

Your home’s brand personality is in essence a reflection of who you (and your family) are. It’s the core traits that you can use to describe your home or how you want it to feel at the end of the renovation. Do you want the space to feel sophisticated and elegant? Fun and playful? Warm and approachable? Defining these traits is key to building a strong visual and verbal identity that communicates how and what you want your home to be and feel.

Where do you begin? Here are some tips that can help get you to your home’s brand personality:

  • Start with 3-5 adjectives:

What are the key words that you keep coming back to when envisioning your home? They may already be reflected in your wardrobe, places you like to travel to, music you enjoy, and so many other sources of inspiration!

  • Imagine your dream “spokesperson” or spokes“place”:

Is there a home that inspires you or that you aspire yours to be? What landmark or local building could be the perfect reflection of your home’s brand?

  • Create a mood or inspiration board:

If you’re having trouble describing your home, sometimes it helps to visualize it. Compile images of the type of home you want or specific features you want to capture in your renovation.

  • Think of how you want your guests to feel when visiting your home:

Sometimes when we focus on other people it provides better clarity than thinking of ourselves.

Identifying and articulating your home’s brand personality can take time, so don’t force it. It’s important to think about it genuinely and make sure it is an authentic reflection of you and your family. It can help define the direction of the style and finishes you choose in your space and be your guide when making those big decisions. All of this reflection and soul searching will pay off in the long run!
